Shards and runes are socketable items that insert directly into your pickaxe to provide passive bonuses while you mine. They differ in rarity and power — shards are the base tier and easier to obtain, while runes are the upgraded tier offering stronger effects. Both use the same socket system, so the same slots accept either type.

Effect Types

There are 13 effect types available across shards and runes:

Shard vs Rune

Both types are socketed the same way and occupy the same slot type — the difference is purely in how strong the effect is.

Socket Slots

Each pickaxe starts with a limited number of open socket slots. Additional slots unlock as your pickaxe reaches higher levels and as you complete prestige tiers. This means the most powerful socket configurations are only available to deeply invested players. Slot progression thresholds are configured in config.yml under the sockets section.
Socketed items are consumed when inserted — plan your loadout carefully before socketing high-tier runes, since you cannot un-socket them without losing the item.

Socketing

To socket a shard or rune into your pickaxe:
  1. Hold the shard or rune item in your hand
  2. Right-click with it
  3. It automatically inserts into the first available open socket on your active pickaxe
The pickaxe’s lore updates immediately to reflect the new socketed effect and its current boost value.
Stack complementary effects for maximum efficiency. Pairing a Sell rune with a Rewards rune and a Luck shard gives you higher earnings, better economy multipliers, and more rare drops all at once.
